About

Why can an ordinary walk become so difficult for some dogs?

Calmer Walks began with that question. It's a resource built by people who ran into the problem themselves, wanted to understand it properly, and put together the guide we wished had been easier to find.

How it started

For co-founder Hubert Block, the question became personal after his dog moved from a quieter environment in Jutland, Denmark, into a city. Suddenly, everyday life contained more people, more dogs, more movement, more noise, and far more unexpected encounters than before.

Walks changed. His dog began reacting strongly to situations that had once been easy to navigate, often barking when people or other dogs appeared.

Rather than treating the barking itself as the whole problem, we wanted to understand what was happening before it — what our dog was experiencing, and why some situations produced a much stronger reaction than others. That curiosity became the starting point for Calmer Walks.

Why we built Calmer Walks

We started exploring published research, books, and educational material created by people working in dog training and behaviour, looking for a clearer way to understand ideas like threshold, distance, body language, trigger intensity, and stress. What we found was a lot of genuinely useful information — but it was scattered across many different sources, written in inconsistent language, and not always easy to act on.

Calmer Walks grew from the idea of bringing those concepts together in one place, in a format that feels practical, approachable, and easy to return to when you actually need it — not just once, but on the difficult walks that follow.

We don't believe in miracle fixes, and we're careful not to promise them. We believe that understanding what's actually happening is a better place to start than a list of quick tricks.

How we create our content

Every guide and article on this site is researched using multiple credible sources — published behavioural science, books, established educational material, and resources created by dog-training and behaviour professionals. We paraphrase and explain what we learn rather than copying it, and where an article makes a factual claim, we try to point toward where that idea comes from.

We're careful with the language we use. Reactivity is a description of behaviour, not automatically a diagnosis, and not automatically aggression. We avoid promising that reactivity can be permanently "cured" or "fixed," and we recommend individualised professional or veterinary support for bite history, sudden behavioural change, or serious safety concerns.

Who's behind this

Calmer Walks is part of BlockToft, founded by Hubert Friis Hundevad Block and Jakob Anker Kaltoft. BlockToft was created from a broader interest in building useful, well-researched resources that help people understand difficult or confusing subjects more clearly. Calmer Walks is our first resource built around that idea, starting with reactive dogs.

Important disclaimer. Calmer Walks provides educational information only. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for an individualised assessment from a qualified veterinarian or behaviour professional — particularly where a bite history or serious aggression is involved.
